How to play DailyClue
DailyClue has three daily puzzles: Five Letters, Word Ladder and CodeBreak. Every player gets the same puzzle for each game on the same day, and all three change at midnight India Standard Time (IST).
Each game once a day
- All three games are open every day, and you can play every one of them.
- Each game can be played once per day. When you finish it, it stays finished until the next puzzle at midnight IST.
- A rejected guess (not a word, wrong length, and so on) does not use up a try.
- Your progress is remembered on your device. Clearing your browser data, or using another browser, resets it.
Five Letters
Find the hidden five-letter word in six guesses. Each guess must be a real word from our dictionary; a word that is not accepted does not use up a guess.
- Green: the letter is in the word and in the right place.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word but in a different place.
- Grey: the letter is not in the word (or you have used it more times than it appears).
Repeated letters are scored carefully: a letter is marked green or yellow only as many times as it really appears in the answer.
Word Ladder
You are given a start word and a target word of the same length. Turn one into the other in six moves or fewer.
- Each move changes exactly one letter.
- Every word along the way must be a real word from our dictionary.
- You cannot repeat a word you have already used.
- Rejected words do not use a move. If you run out of moves, the target and one valid ladder are shown.
For example, COLD → CORD → WORD changes one letter at each step.
CodeBreak
CodeBreak is a one-player code-breaking game based on the classic pencil-and-paper puzzle Bulls and Cows. Somewhere is a hidden code. Your job is to work out what it is using only the clues each guess earns you.
The hidden code
- It has four digits.
- All four digits are different.
- The first digit is never 0.
That leaves exactly 4,536 possible codes. Your guesses follow the same rules, so 1123 and 0543 are not accepted.
Reading the clues
After each guess two circles appear beside it:
- Green counts digits that are correct and in the correct position.
- Yellow counts digits that are in the code but in a different position.
- A grey 0 means none of that kind.
The clues never say which digits are green or yellow. Working that out is the puzzle. Each digit is counted once: it is either green or yellow, never both.
A worked example
Suppose the hidden code is 4 2 7 1 and you guess 1 2 3 4.
- 2 is second in both codes: 1 green.
- 1 and 4 are in the code, but in other positions: 2 yellow.
- 3 is not in the code at all, so it scores nothing.
Winning and losing
You have eight tries. Get four greens and you win. If your eighth guess is not right, the game ends and the code is revealed in the statistics window.
Daily puzzle
There is one code per day, the same for every player, and it changes at midnight India Standard Time (IST). Your progress and statistics are remembered on your device. The result screen shows a countdown to the next code and a button to share your result without spoiling the answer.
Tips
- Open with four different digits, such as
1234, then5678. The totals tell you how many digits from each group are in the code. - If a guess scores 0 green and 0 yellow, every digit in it is out. The keypad greys those digits out for you.
- Change one thing at a time once you are close. Swap two digits to learn whether they are green.

Controls
Type digits with your keyboard or tap the on-screen keypad. Press Backspace to delete and Enter to submit. Rejected guesses (repeated digits, a leading 0, a guess you already tried) do not use up a try.
Statistics and streaks
Your statistics are kept on your device. A game counts as completed when it ends in a win or a loss, and a streak is the number of consecutive Indian days on which you completed a game. Unfinished games do not count.
